Introduction

Go directly to the search form.

These indices are of those images for which we hold negatives. In addition to this there is material, which is in the process of being catalogued, an ongoing task. If you cannot locate the photograph you are looking for please contact the Historic Photographs Section with the details of the vessel or place in question.

Please go to the bottom of the page to order a print.

KEY TO THE INDEXES

Ships

All the ships have the same catalogue format.
· Name of Vessel
· Country of Register (in brackets)
· Museum internal filing code
· Date of Launch (warships)/Completion (merchant ships/pleasure craft)
· Other information such as type of vessel, former names, and owners/managers

The negative number is listed on the left (usually with a prefix P, N or G) and must be quoted in full.
All negatives quoted will be black and white, unless there is one of the following suffixes:
CT – Colour Transparency
CN – Colour Negative
BWT – Black and White Transparency

Next to the negative number, in brackets, is the code that indicates from which direction the photograph was taken:
P – Port, S – Starboard. A double dash (--) indicates an onboard photograph relating to, but not of, the vessel (e.g. deck scene).

The alphabetical code denotes the quality of the negative taking into consideration its age and other factors: A – good, B – average to good, C – poorer negative, D – indicates a very substandard image. A reticulated negative has suffered degradation and should not be quoted.

The information following this includes dates, places and events &c… (if known)

Topographical

These are listed by place name and county for British ports, or place name and country for non-British ports. Next is the internal filing codes, followed by the Lloyd’s Maritime Atlas codes.

Historical

The photographs cover specific historical events and are arranged chronologically.

People

These photographs are arranged alphabetically by surname with the individual’s year of death.

Help

Using Boolean operators: AND, OR and NOT

Two or more search terms can be linked using Boolean operators, for example :

  • Searching on 'lifeboat AND lighthouse' will find records that contain both "lifeboat" and "lighthouse".
  • Searching on 'lifeboat OR lighthouse' will find records that contain either "lifeboat" or "lighthouse".
  • Searching on 'lifeboat NOT lighthouse' will find records that contain "lifeboat" unless they also contain "lighthouse".
  • Boolean operators can be combined in more complex ways using brackets, e.g.: Searching on '(lifeboat OR lifesaving) AND (lighthouse NOT optics)' will find records that contain either "lifeboat" or "lifesaving" and "lighthouse" but not "optics".
