Description:

Scale: 1:16. A contemporary full hull model of a shallop circa 1691, built in the Navy Board style. It has been built from an unidentified English fruitwood and sealed with a layer of varnish with the ornate decoration highlighted with gold leaf. The model shows two strakes of the overlapping or clinker planking. The lower strakes have been omitted in order to show the hull section.

The original was built in clinker fashion and measured 29 feet in length by 6 feet in the beam and would have been rowed by up to ten oarsmen. It is thought that this model may represent a design for a barge built for King William III and is very similar to the full size Queen Mary’s Shallop in the Collection (BAE0039) and the Royal Barge of Charles II now on display at the Royal Naval Museum, Portsmouth. These barges were used for transporting the monarchs between the Royal Palaces along the Thames as well as visiting warships at anchors in the river and estuaries.
