This part of Collections Online features over 700 items from the National Maritime Museum collection about Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758–1805) . Nelson is Britain's greatest naval hero. His exploits were commemorated in paintings, prints, souvenirs, poetry and song and his death at the Battle of Trafalgar made him the model of duty and devotion to his country. Later on, the Victorian age found it difficult to square this glorious reputation with his scandalous private life. The contradictions between the public hero and the private man have continued to sustain public fascination with Nelson’s life and career for two centuries since his death at Trafalgar in 1805. |
