Astronomical compendium

Astronomical compendium for latitudes 0°-86° North for the equinoctial dial (46° North for horizontal dial). This compendium takes the form of a diptych dial and is divided into four leaves. Leaf Ia contains an equinoctial dial and a nocturnal. Leaf Ib has a table of latitudes and a perpetual calendar. The table of latitudes comprises fairly standard places in Europe, but also some from further a field such as Babylon, Carthage, Jerusalem and Alexandria.

The reverse sides of the equinoctial dial and lunar volvelle are set in a rimmed circular depression in the ivory containing an hour scale, a wind-ring and an hour-circle. Within these are five concentric circular scales: a lunar-age scale, a year scale, a Dominical letters scale, an Epact circle and a prime scale. Leaf IIa contains the horizontal dial, with a string gnomon, and a surveyor's compass. Around the compass are two hinged sights. Leaf IIb features a quadrant and a shadow square to be used in conjunction with a brass plumb bob and red string plumb line, which are stored in a hole in the side of the lower leaf.

This is the only French compendium in the collection. It is similar in style to AST0485 and may have been made by the same maker (unknown). The surveyor's compass is a somewhat unusual inclusion in the collection of instruments that comprise this compendium. Other compendia carry simple theodolites (see AST0136) but this is the only one with a surveyor's compass. The table of latitudes is similar to that on AST0339.
