Earl Richard Howe

A half-length portrait of Richard Howe, Earl Howe (1726–1799) in admiral’s undress uniform, 1787–1795. This portrait was engraved by Robert Dunkarton after John Singleton Copley’s bust-length oil painting of around 1790, originally painted for display underneath his massive painting of the Siege of Gibraltar (Guildhall Art Gallery) when the latter work was exhibited in a purpose-built tent in Green Park in 1791. A version of this painting is now in the National Maritime Museum (see BHC2790). Dunkarton’s print was published by Copley himself on 10 September 1794. This impression has been cut down, removing the publication line. (Updated June 2019.)
