A half-length portrait very slightly to left, wearing a black dress and cap with a red drape on the right, with the sitter looking directly ahead to meet the gaze of the viewer. Anne Suckling (nee Turner) was the grandmother of Lord Nelson and mother of Captain Maurice Suckling (see BHC3045). She was the niece of Robert Walpole, first Earl or Orford, who had been Britain's first 'prime minister' in the early 18th century, a connection important in both the Suckling and Nelson families in terms of social position and the patronage to which it gave access. This is a modern copy and is one of a pair with BHC3044. It is inscribed ‘Anne Suckling Ob[ii]t 1768’, bottom right.
