Admiral Earl Howe...from a Picture...in the possession of Captn E P Brenton...

A half-length portrait of Richard Howe, Earl Howe (1726–1799) in admiral’s undress uniform, 1787–1795. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘Admiral Earl Howe. Engraved by R. Cooper from a Picture by Maquignon in the possession of Captn. E. P. Brenton, the Original by Copley.’ This portrait was engraved by Richard Cooper after a copy by Peter Mequignon after John Singleton Copley’s bust-length oil painting of around 1790. A version of Copley’s painting is now in the National Maritime Museum (see BHC2790). Cooper’s print was published by Henry Colburn in 1836 as an illustration for Edward Pelham Brenton’s ‘The Naval History of Great Britain, from the Year MDCCLXXXIII to MDCCCXXXVI’ (London: Henry Colburn, 1837), volume 1, page 123. (Updated June 2019.)
