'Otranto' (1909)

The passenger liner 'Otranto' (1909) underway during speed trials off Skelmorlie, a view of the starboard side of the ship from broadside.

This is a copy negative made by Bedford Lemere & Co in 1913; the original photographer is unknown. A handwritten caption 'No. 278 Otranto' appears in reverse in the bottom left corner of the image. This vessel was Yard No 278 built by Workman, Clark & Co Ltd, Belfast.

A pair of measured mile posts can be seen on the shoreline in the background of the image. The maximum speed achieved as the mean of two runs (with and against the tide) was 18.95 knots.
