Seafront with a paddle steamer beaching, Sidmouth, Devon
Following King George III’s visit to Sidmouth in 1781, it grew from a small village into a stylish resort. It was popular with affluent visitors including Queen Victoria’s parents. Bypassed by the railway in the mid-19th century, Sidmouth declined in popularity; tourists were deterred by the long coach journey from Exeter. The railway finally here arrived in the late 19th century. Sidmouth is the gateway to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, which also includes Lyme Regis in Dorset.
