Diorama

One of a pair of mixed media dioramas (see ZBA2496) in the style of Gerrit Schouten (1779-1839). Schouten was the first recorded artist of Creole origin in Surinam (Dutch Guyana). He produced elaborate dioramas documenting life both in indigenous and escaped slave communities. He is also known for his paintings of the flora and fauna of the colony.
