House flag, Lyle Shipping Co. Ltd

The house flag of Lyle Shipping Co. Ltd, Glasgow. A dark blue rectangular flag with a white disc in the centre bearing a blue 'L'. The flag is made of a wool and synthetic fibre bunting. It has a linen hoist and is machine sewn. A rope is attached.

Founded by Alexander Park Lyle, Lyle Shipping was registered as a ship management business in 1903. The board were also involved in the ownership of a small fleet of tramp steamers with all their names beginning with 'Cape'. New ships were registered under the management company from 1910 and the business was liquidated and restarted under the same name in 1920.

Having survived the depression and vessel losses during the Second World War, Lyle Shipping became a public company in 1953. Its vessels traded worldwide carrying phosphates, iron ore, coal, grain, timber and cars. The company added bulk carriers to the fleet from the 1960s. The shipping staff was merged with that of H. Hogarth & Sons to form Scottish Ship Management Ltd in 1968 and a new company livery was designed. The company went into receivership in 1987.
