Distinguished Service Cross awarded to Temporary Lieutenant Philip Gordon Lee, DSC, RNVR. The citation from the ‘London Gazette’, 9 October 1942 reads as follows: ‘For bravery, skill and dash in action against the Enemy in the straits of Dover while serving in the motor gunboats’. The first bar was gazetted 30 July 1943, ‘For skill and daring in a successful encounter with superior enemy forces in enemy coastal waters while serving in Light Coastal Craft’. The second bar was gazetted 10 November 1944, ‘For outstanding enterprise and skill in preventing the enemy from bringing supplies to and withdrawing troops from Le Havre.’

The medal is in the form of a plain silver cross pattee, convexed. In the centre of the obverse side is the Royal Cypher. It is suspended from a blue ribbon with a central white stripe. On the reverse is inscribed ‘1942’. The medal is complete with its fitted box of issue together with two bars on a separate piece of ribbon. Inscribed on the reverse of the bars are the dates: ‘1943’ and ‘1944’. Bars are awarded for subsequent acts of gallantry.
