Album relating to the Royal Naval service of Admiral Sir George P. W. Hope, KCMG, CB

A photograph album with black/blue board covers. There are 161 photographs pasted in, 10 loose photographs and 4 caricature drawings. This album relates to the naval career of Admiral Hope and includes photographs of the Versailles Supreme War Council, 1918 and the Paris Peace Conference, 1919. Ships include HMS Pioneer (1899), HMS Good Hope (1901) in 1905-07, HMS Bulwark (1911) in 1911, and HMS Cardiff (1917) in 1920. Places include Sheerness Admiralty House in 1909-10; Royal Naval War College, Portsmouth, 1907-8; Conference on Otranto Barrage, in Rome, February 1918; Supreme War Council, in Versailles, October 1918; Spa, February-March 1919; Peace Conference, in Paris, January-July 1919; Gallipoli in 1919; Odessa in 1920.. Naval officers are also represented as well as Royalty including the Kaiser. There are a few family photographs of unidentified children.

Admiral Hope entered the Royal Navy in 1882 was promoted to Lieutenant in 1889, Commander 1900, Captain 1905, Rear Admiral 1917, Deputy First Sea Lord 1918, Vice Admiral 1920 and Admiral 1925. He was captain of HMS Good Hope from 1905-1907 and later was Inspector of Target Practice in 1907. Hope was attached to the RN War College in 1908. Later ships include HMS Magnificent, Bulwark and Queen Elizabeth (1913). He was Admiralty representative at the Armistice negotiations at Compiegne 1918. Between 1919-1921 he commanded 3rd LCS, Mediterranean Fleet. He was President of the RNC Greenwich from 1923-26 and retired in 1926. Admiral Hope was a Trustee of the NMM and Chairman of the SNR. He died 11 July 1959.
