Service vessel; Lifeboat; Collapsible lifeboat

Scale: 1:6. A full hull model of a collapsible lifeboat, circa 1856 made in wood and canvas fabric. The model is complete with wooden frames hinged at the bow and stern, over which is stretched a painted canvas skin. It currently illustrates the boat ready for use and is complete with two wooden battens which when undone and removed, allows the hull to collapse into a flat stow position for stowage. The hull is double-ended, shallow draft and wide beamed and the canvas skin is coated with a sealant that has patinated a dark brown finish. The bow and stern are upturned in the manner of a canoe. Fittings include wide wooden strakes made of polished wood. On plaque ‘Collapsible lifeboat. Invented by the Rev'd G.L. Berthon in 1857. No 71 Div D CL II’.
