Presentation Sword

A Lloyds Patriotic Fund £100 Presentation Sword. It was owned by Vice-Admiral Thomas Dundas (d.1841). The hilt consists of a diamond-knurled ivory grip, with the gilt-metal pommel and back-piece in the form of a lion's skin. The quillon is in the form of a Roman fasces and the knuckle-guard in the form of the club of Hercules entwined with a snake which attaches to a loop in the lion's mouth. The langets are engraved with triangular floral pendants, below which is a rectangular plaque with a group in relief of a cannon, anchor, trident etc. The sword is complete with a blue and gold sword-knot and a fitted mahogany box lined with blue baize.

An inscription on the box (brass plaque on top) reads: 'From the Patriotic Fund Lloyds London to Captn Thos. Dundas of H.M.S. Naiad 1805', and on the obverse of the blade: 'FROM THE PATRIOTIC FUND AT LLOYDS TO THOMAS DUNDAS ESQR CAPTN OF H.M.S. NAIAD FOR HIS MERITORIOUS SERVICES IN CONTRIBUTING TO THE SIGNAL VICTORY OBTAINED OVER THE COMBINED/ FLEETS OF FRANCE AND SPAIN OFF CAPE TRAFALGAR, ON THE 21ST OF OCTOBER 1805'. On the reverse of the blade are the initials: 'T.D.' (off receipt) in a monogram. On the scabbard (both sides) (round oval medallion of Britannia) is the inscription: 'NAIAD. NELSON TRAFALGAR 21ST OCTR 1805'. At the edge of the mouth: 'R.TEED, SWORD CUTLER, LANCASTER COURT, STRAND'.

Thomas Dundas RN became a Lieutenant on 15 July 1793; a Commander on 2 September 1795; a Captain on 9 July 1798; a Captain of the 'Niaid' at Trafalgar in 1805; a Rear-Admiral in 1825 and a Vice-Admiral in 1837. He was created KCB in 1831 and died in 1841. The sword was acquired with the Patriotic Fund sword belt and Hornby family swords, medals, gun models and ships crests (W88-21), plus paintings, MSS and Photo albums (PR1988-18 to -85; MS88/061; HP1988/49).
