Gold City of London freedom box presented to Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757).

Rectangular gold box with a hinged lid. An engraving of the City of London coat of arms with the motto 'DOMINE DIRIGE NOS' covers the lid of the box, within a scrolled border with scallop shell design at the corners and classical figures of Hercules on the left and Victory on the right. Inscribed above the arms is: 'NEC PLURIBUS IMPAR.', and below: 'MAJORA MANENT'. The front of the box is inscribed 'IASPER CUNST LONDON'.

Jasper Cunst was one of the finest gold box-makers in London in the 18th century. This important box was made to contain the grant of the Freedom of the City of London to Admiral Vernon, the victor of Portobello, March 1740. The thanks of both Houses were voted to the Admiral and the Court of Common Council resolved to present him with the Freedom of the City in a gold box 'as a testimony of the greatest sense this city hath of his eminent services to the Nation by taking Porto-Bello and demolishing the fortifications thereof'.

A ship’s portrait of the paddle steamer ‘City of London’ shown broadside-on. She is shown off the coast with land visible in the distance. The ‘City of London’ was an iron steamer built on the Clyde in 1844 by Mr Napier for the Aberdeen and London Steam Navigation Company. She was furnished with spacious cabins and roomy state rooms. By the mid-19th century, regular paddle steamship services from London to many British and European ports were becoming established.

The National Maritime Museum also has a half block design model (SLR0821) of the passenger paddle steamer 'City of London' in its collection.

The identification of this ship as an East Indiaman, is probably based on its substantial armament of 20 broadside guns over the hold and the well ventilated 'coach' – the passenger accommodation under the raised poop. The drawing is signed by Pocock, lower right, with an indistinct 1780s date. It is also clearly a relatively early drawing, in the rather stiff grey-wash style that characterizes much of his work while still living in his native Bristol. He only moved to London in 1789 – which is where such ships were normally found – though the location shown is uncertain.
