Research guide Q3: Relics of Sir John Franklin's last expedition

Many of the items listed in this guide are now available to view in the Franklin relics section of Collections Online.

This guide lists the relics and personal possessions found from Sir John Franklin's last voyage, which form part of the Hopton Hall Collection, held by the National Maritime Museum on loan from the Gell Muniment Trustees.

Items are listed in chronological order of discovery, showing the place and expedition which recovered them (where known).

As well as the relics, the Museum holds charts and maps from the Hopton Hall Collection relating to Franklin's voyages (see research guides Q1 and Q2).

Introduction

Sir John Franklin's final expedition in search of a North West Passage set off in 1845 in two ships the Erebus and Terror. The two vessels were sighted by whaling vessels at the end of July, after which they were never seen again.

From 1847 over 40 search expeditions were sent out. Traces of Franklin's first winter camp were found on Beechey Island. But only when Dr John Rae discovered some of the expedition's more portable possessions in the hands of Inuit, at Repulse and Pelly Bays, did the search turn successfully to the southern part of the Arctic archipelago. The Inuit said the missing expedition had died of starvation having reached the shores of King William Island.

Francis Leopold McClintock, in the steam yacht Fox, confirmed the Inuit story, finding a trail of bodies and discarded possessions down the west coast of the island. Lieutenant Frederick Schwatka, US army, retraced the steps of McClintock's party during the summer of 1879 and found new traces of Franklin's men on the mainland, where the last survivors had perished. Schwatka named the site 'Starvation Cove'.
