Virtual tour of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich

Welcome to our interactive virtual tour of Flamsteed House at the Royal Observatory. The following 360° panoramas allow you to 'walk through' from the courtyard and the Meridian Line, enter the galleries of Flamsteed House and enjoy the view from the roof.

Each image has clickable hotspots that allow you to move between locations. There are more hotspots within the Harrison gallery that provide further information about the Harrison timekeepers.


Start your tour

Select which version of the tour you wish to use below. Each tour begins at the Meridian Line.

Select the Ipix tour to enjoy full-functionality and minimal download times. If you do not have a fast internet connection the images in each tour will take some time to appear. Make sure you select the 'low bandwidth' option (below), but be prepared to wait.

The Ipix version requires a plug-in to work with your browser. Please download it before you begin. Please note the Opera browser does not support the Ipix plug-in. If you do not have another browser installed, please select the Java tour.

The Java version will work without a plug-in, although we suggest you download the latest version of Java to ensure full-compatibility.

Instructions - Ipix

First select the most suitable tour, depending on the speed of your internet connection. Using your mouse, click and drag the cursor over the image to move around. You can move up and down as well as from side to side. The further from the centre you drag your cursor, the faster the image will move.

If the image moves too fast, use the right-hand button on your mouse to click and adjust the navigation speed to a comfortable level.

To zoom in and out of the image, move your cursor to the centre. The cursor will change from a hand icon to a magnifying glass. Click just above centre to zoom in and just below centre to zoom out.

Each image has 'hotspots’ which will allow you to move to another location. Hover over the hotspot to see where it will take you and double-click to go there.

If you cannot find the hotspots, right-click again on the image and select 'Show Hotspot Targets'. They will now be illustrated with red targets.

You can also use your keyboard to navigate within the panoramas. The cursor keys will allow you to move up, down, left and right. To zoom in and out press the plus '+' and minus '-' keys respectively. Double-tap the return key to activate a hotspot.

Instructions - Java

Please wait for the images to load – the panorama will begin to spin when it has loaded. Using your mouse, click and drag the cursor over the image to move around. You can move up and down as well as from side to side. The further from the centre you drag your cursor, the faster the image will move.

To zoom in and out of the image, move your cursor to the centre. The cursor will change from a four-point 'compass' to a two-pointed diagonal line. Click just above centre to zoom in (the line will point NE to SW) and just below centre to zoom out (the line will point NW to SE).

Each image has 'hotspots' which will allow you to move to another location. Each hotspot is highlighted by a red box. Hover over the hotspot to see where it will take you and click to go there.

You can also use your keyboard to navigate within the panoramas. The cursor keys will allow you to move up, down, left and right. To zoom in and out press the 'x' and 'z' keys respectively. Press the space bar to reset the view.
