A rough drawing, cut on the left and at the top, of the ‘Royal Sovereign’ at anchor, taken from before the port beam with the royal standard at the main, the Admiralty flag (vertical anchor) at the fore, and streamers on the yardarms.

This is an unsigned pencil drawing by the Elder. It is inscribed on the back in brown ink in a shaky hand, ‘Adrianis No 2 / een siournal / reunee schetsen’; and in pencil ‘Van t Jaer 1673 / & stranden’ (?Adriaan No. 2 – A journal- rined sketches – of 1673 – and shores). It is inferior to the Elder’s later work and may be by Adriaen van de Velde the Younger (i.e. Willem the Elder’s grandson, and son of his landscape painting younger son Adriaen, 1636–72).
