To James Vernon... This Plate... Taking of Porto Bello by Adml Vernon Novr 22nd 1739... (shows the 'Burford' and 'Hampton Court')

Print. This print was the basis for George Chambers's 1838 painting of the event (BHC0355), commissioned to mark its centenary by Edward Hawke Locker for presentation to the Naval Gallery of Greenwich Hospital, of which he was then resident civil commissioner. His great-grandfather, Commodore Charles Brown in the 'Hampton Court', had been Vernon's second-in-command and led the successful assault on the Iron Castle, on the left. The sword of the Spanish commander, formally surrendered to Vernon on that occasion, he immediately gave to Brown at the Spaniard's insistent request. In 1838 it also belonged to Locker but was purchased by the Museum from his family in 1963 and is now WPN1248. For Brown's portrait, also presented to Greenwich Hospital by Locker to mark the centenary, see BHC2578.
