A half-length portrait facing to right of Edward Pellew, 1st Viscount Exmouth (1757–1833) in captain’s full-dress uniform, 1795–1812, with the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘Edward Pellew, Viscount Exmouth, G.C.B. OB. 1833. From the Original by Sir T. Lawrence in the possession of Edward Hawke Locker Esqr.’ Also lettered with the publication details: ‘Engraved by H. Robinson. / London. Published April 1, 1835, by Harding & Lepard, Pall Mall East.’ This print was engraved by Henry Robinson after Thomas Lawrence’s oil painting of around 1797, which is now in the collection of the National Maritime Museum (see ZBA0434). As the inscription on the print notes, Lawrence’s painting was owned in the nineteenth century by Edward Hawke Locker, who had been Pellew’s civil secretary from 1804 until 1814. The painting was first engraved by Charles Turner in 1815 (see PAI7849). Painted before Pellew’s promotion to rear-admiral in 1804, Lawrence’s painting did not originally include the regalia of the Order of the Bath, to which the sitter was appointed in January 1815. Although published after this date, Turner’s mezzotint does not feature either the star or the ribbon of the Bath. The star of the Bath was subsequently added to Lawrence’s painting. In this print, Robinson has added both the star and the ribbon of the Bath. This print was published by Harding and Lepard on 1 April 1835. (Updated May 2019.)
