Polished steel balance with blued-steel, flat spiral balance spring. Pierced and engraved balance cock with grotesque mask. Diamond endstone in polished steel setting. Tompion style regulator with silver regulating disc engraved with Arabic numerals 5-30. Steel cylinder with brass escape wheel. Stop piece protruding through inner case near 40. Engraved on potence plate with the words 'Thos. Mudge', 'Wm. Dutton', 'London' and '878 '. Gilt metal cap signed 'Thos Mudge', 'Wm Dutton' and 'London'. Scratched inside with '.878 '. Convex white enamel dial with Roman hour numerals, minute circle and Arabic five minute markers. Blued-steel beetle and poker hands. Silver pair case, hallmarked 'London 1770-1771' with incuse makers mark 'P M' (Peter Mounier, Frith St., Soho). Scratched inside inner gilded case with the numbers '62/58' and '10/60'. Large engraved 'W. L' monogram to outer case back. Small slim silver pendant with silver stirrup bow. Bullseye glass over dial. The cylinder is a replacement. The hands are probably also all later replacements. Thomas Mudge (1715-1794) who was one of London's most celebrated makers entered into partnership with William Dutton, an apprentice of George Graham in 1759. They had business premises at 148, Fleet Street, London. Mudge retired from the partnership in 1771. This watch was bequeathed to Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) by William Locker (1731-1800) who had been his commanding officer on 'H.M.S. Lowestoft' in 1777.
