Emma, Lady Hamilton, 1765-1815

(Updated November 2015) Oval miniature in watercolour an an oval gilt metal frame with a suspension loop, and a glazed back over a green inlay. The sitter is shown bust length, turned to her left, with her head facing back to the viewer and slightly cocked to one side. This - with her striking blue eyes looking directly at the spectator - produces a coquettish impression, reinforced by the informal low-cut white gown, over bare shoulders and brown hair worn long at the back, in calculated disarray from that bound up on the top of the head with a string of pearls. There is also a short single-string pearl necklace. The gown is what is usually called 'Van Dyck' style - a pastiche of mid-17th-century dress - which was a occasional costume in European vogue from the 1770s into the early 19th century. The background is a neutral grey and the image is signed 'T. Fall', lower right. The letters 'NW' are also painted on the reverse, indicating it is part of the Nelson-Ward Collection, presented by the Revd Hugh Nelson-Ward, the Admiral's great-grandson, formal Museum acquisition being in 1946.

This is a copy of a miniature in watercolour on ivory which was presented to what is now the Royal Naval Museum, Portsmouth, in 1957 by the widow of Hugh Nelson-Ward's cousin, Maurice Suckling Ward. The original is usually stated to be by Henry Bone, though possibly mistakenly for reasons of likely date and other confusions of its history. However, there is no reason to doubt that it was originally in Lady Hamilton's possession before being in the hands of the family of her and Nelson's daughter Horatia, who married the Revd Hugh Ward in 1822. Nothing is yet known of 'T.Fall' the copyist, but he is presumed to be late-19th or early 20th century since another of the miniatures Mrs M.S.Ward presented to Portsmouth in 1957 was a copy of one of Nelson, stated to be 'Copied at Fall's, Baker Street' in London.
